 Greetings from Las Vegas and CES 2008!
If you've ever wondered if it's possible for a trade show to get TOO big, this is the one that will make you feel that way! Reportedly in excess of 180,000 are in Sin City for this show, and it shows… Traffic jams are everywhere, and I mean foot traffic jams, as well as the motorized kind! The show is SO big, they even provide a shuttle bus just to get around the Las Vegas Convention Center (as well as to get you to the Hilton, Sands, and Venetian, each of which plays host to an important part of the show).
The DVD-related announcement heard around the world wasn't actually
made here at CES, it was made the Friday before: Warner Bros announced
they would exclusively release their Next-Gen optical disc titles using
the Blu-ray format. Some pundits are claiming the format war is now
over, but I'm not so sure that's a foregone conclusion…
I'll be spending time here at CES talking with many folks about the
status of Next-Gen disc formats, and how the Warner Bros. announcement,
and optical disc developments in general affect the future of HD DVD
and Blu-ray disc from a Content Owner's perspective! The DVDA will be
presenting at many events in 2008 with dozens of sessions in this
coming year on how to produce for Next Gen formats (as well as how to
produce more effectively with SD DVD!).
Our first event in January 31st in London, in conjunction with
Broadcast Live / Video Forum at Earl's Court exhibition centre in
London. We will also have events at NAB in April, Digital Hollywood in
May, and more as the year goes along…
All of these events will be impacted by the ever-changing landscape of
the Next Gen authoring tools, so rest assured we will be monitoring the
status of all of these tools, and offering our insight as the year goes
along!
