DVD Workflow 2005

Thursday 10th November

The Penthouse
1 Leicester Square
London
W1

This was a one-off, seminar-style event, for industry professionals in the global DVD, production and post production sectors, and was run alongside the DVD Association (www.dvda.org).

Speakers included Will Timbers, Director of Pink Pigeon Ltd., who presented alongside Larry Applegate of Rivergate Software, who flew in from California especially for this event. They looked at practical DVD production, and post-authoring solutions such as DVD AfterEdit.

Chris Duke, European Software Product manager of Apple discussed some of the Apple solutions for the DVD market, and looked at future developments, whilst Senior SoHo Editors Trainer Jamie McAllister gave an overview of DVD Studio Pro 4, 2 copies of which were given away at the end of the day.

DVDA Board member Bob Auger gave a presentation on the DVD workflow, including some information on the next generation of discs, with technical info on Blu-ray and HD DVD, and went some ways towards helping visitors through the format minefield.

On the audio side, Andy Dowell from Dolby Laboratories discussed multi-channel audio formats for the next generations of discs, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. In relation to this, he also looked speaker placements, bit rates, and much more. Rob Kelly from Strongroom looked at the production issues for creating the audio on these next generation discs.

Also regarding next generation discs, Rob Pinniger from Abbey Road Interactive gave a talk on the creation of interactive content. As a final treat for attendees, Andy Evans, MD of The Pavement and also a DVDA board member, took us through the new PlayStation Portable format, and creating UMD discs. Attendess we lucky enough to have a a demo of one of the few UMD Emulators currently in existence.

The event was attended by DVDA members, DVD authors and facility managers, editors, producers, production managers and other industry professionals that wanted to learn more about DVD technology, workflows and business models.

The Penthouse, the exclusive venue used for DVD Workflow, commanded stunning views of central London, with coffees, a canape lunch and post-event drinks all laid on.

Thanks to all everyone that came along, and of course to the speakers who made the day what it was.

Special thanks to Bob Auger and the DVD Association, without whose input the event would not have been possible.
