Dispatch from MIPCOM - Day Two Tuesday October 18, 2005
 (pic 1)
| As you can see, today all roads lead to MIPCOM and this evening’s Gala DVD Awards Presentation. <- (pic1)
| (pic 2) | The action will be happening in the Palais de Festival on the wonderful Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes. <- (pic 2) | (pic 3) | Inside the Palais, the DVD Club (sponsored by the DVD Association) was very busy and not just because we have one of the best views in town. <- (pic 3)
| (pic 4) | In anticipation of the DVD Awards ceremony, The MIPCOM Daily News announced the event with a headline story and photo of British comedian and TV presenter Julian Clary (who is the host) along with the Dutch pop-rock brothers Werring who will appear and perform new songs from their soon to be released debut CD. The article went on to state….
“The quality of DVDs submitted has increased dramatically,” says Bernie Mitchell, president of the DVDA, partner of the Awards along with the IVF (International Video Federation). “Any time creative excellence is acknowledged and celebrated it is good for the DVD industry as a whole. Specifically, the studio, the authoring facility and the many talented individuals who did all the hard creative work behind each DVD need to be recognized,” says Mitchell. <- (pic 4)
| (pic 5) | During the evening’s presentation ten DVDs were recognized for their creativity. The Grand Prix du Jury was presented to Warner Brothers for "Autant en Emporte le Vent" (Gone With The Wind).
Here are all the winners and the International Jury on stage in Cannes. <- (pic 5) For a complete list of all the winners, see our DVDA news item entitled: 2005 MIPCOM DVD AWARDS WINNERS ANNOUNCED.
| (pic 6) | Immediately after the awards ceremony, we all returned to the DVD Club for a post-event celebration. The winners were all in a celebratory mood and the champagne, good feelings and stories all flowed freely. <- (pic6) Left to right: Bernie Mitchell, President DVD Association, Cathie Forgit, Reed Midem, Julian Clary, M.C., and Jean-Paul Commin, President of the International Video Federation and our partner in the MIPCOM DVD AWARDS.
| | | It was a grand celebration! Congratulations to all the winners of this year’s MIPCOM DVD AWARDS and a big thank you to all the companies who entered the competition. The DVD industry is the true winner of all the creative DVD work happening around the world. It is a great time to be part of the exciting world of DVD!
I am sleepy, so there will be more to come.
All in all, just another wonderful day at MIPCOM in Cannes.

 (pic 1)
| Once again the DVD’s are a huge presence at MIPCOM 2005 and the DVD Association is representing the industry at this prestigious event in Cannes, France. As always the event is held at the Palais de Festival right on the beautiful French Riveria. <- (pic1)
| (pic 2) | Here I am welcoming DVDA Board Members Aleen Stein from our NY Chapter, and Bruce Nazarian from our LA Chapter to sunny Cannes. <- (pic 2) | (pic 3) | As usual, we are getting great press in the MIPCOM Daily News. Today’s headline reads “DVDs all the rage at MIPCOM” The article then states “ This market will have a decidedly DVD feel. Firstly, the US’ DVD Association–sponsored DVD Club returns to the Palais’ level 3 allowing delegates to do business in a dedicated environment. ‘It’s a place where delegates can learn more about the art of DVD (including information about the next generation of High Definition DVDs) and at the same time relax in one of the Palais’ most scenic areas,” says DVDA President Bernie Mitchell. <- (pic 3)
| (pic 4) | In addition to dedicated screening rooms at the DVD Club, here DVDA Board Member and International Director,Gerard Schmidt demonstrates his award winning DVDs . <- (pic 4) And of course we are all gearing up for tomorrow’s gala MIPCOM 2005 DVD Awards ceremony. It will be quite a bash.
More to come...

UK DVDA Meeting - Next-Generation Formats
October 13, 2005
 (pic 1)
| Last night, the members of the UK DVD Association meet at the very exciting Apple Store on Regent Street in London to hear the latest news regarding the Next Generation Formats. <- (pic1)
| (pic 2) | As President of the International Association, I started the evening off by welcoming everyone and thanking Apple for their hospitality. I also acknowledged DVDA Board Members Aleen Stein, of our NY Chapter and Bruce Nazarian of our Los Angeles Chapter who had come over to London for this meeting [before being off to Cannes for MIPCOM]. <- (pic 2) | (pic 3)
| First to present was DVDA UK Board Member and President of Newmerique, Bob Auger. Bob spoke on HD DVD, with particular emphasis on it’s relevance and marketing approach to Europe. <- (pic 3)
| (pic 4)
| Next up was Simon James of Sonic who not only presented Blu-ray and compared and contrasted it to HD DVD, but also presented an overview on Sonic’s authoring tools to support both formats. <- (pic 4)
| (pic 5)
|
Chris Duke and Jean-Luc Bouchard of Apple who presented a thrilling example of how Apple’s tools (Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Motion and Compressor) all work in an apparently seamless integration to simplify workflow for the creation of high definition DVDs. | | | After the presentation, the panel fielded a number of questions for the members in attendance, and quite naturally these questions continued in earnest just down the road at the pub after Apple closed their doors. It was a very exciting and informative meeting, thanks to Andy Evans of the Pavement and Bob Auger for organizing this great event. Thanks to all our UK DVD members who put up with the inconvenience of two of the London underground lines being shut for the evening to attend the event, and once again thanks to Apple for the wonderful venue. Next stop, Cannes, France and MIPCOM. Watch for more posts. Bernie |
